The challenge

We were appointed to design a bespoke range of wayfinding structures for Lancaster City Centre. The project has involved an analysis of the city, stakeholder consultation, sign and mapping design.

What we did

Building on the city theme of'small city - big story', our design was a four-sided treasure box revealing local stories through colour, materials, and interpretive character, along with clear navigational information. The signs are constructed from cast bronze frames, glass panels with reverse applied graphics, and engraved stone base panels.

The solution

This project took the rich history of Lancaster and imbued it into everything we produced. The city is now richer for having these unique wayfinding solutions.

What our client said...
Kate Smith

Placemarque led on designing, producing and installing a family of wayfinding signs to strengthen the physical connectivity across the town and encourage movements between the historic quay, castle and canal. The signs successfully conveyed the message that while Lancaster is physically small there is much to explore. The signs will be an enduring feature of the city’s landscape.
